Born on April 6, 1916, Bill Beerthuis served in the 544th Field Artillery Battalion as a cook. His wife, Emily wrote him daily from Chicago where they lived at the time. Our collection consists of some of Emily’s, parents, and friends’ letters spanning September through November of 1945. It is evident in the letters how much his family and friends wanted him to come home from the service. On September eighth, Emily says, “The thought of you is with me every minute”. He died of natural causes in June of 1986.
