    Sept. 17, 1943. Letters #8.

My darling Jeannette:

Yesterday day, I was most pleased to receive another letter from you, #2, written Sept. 3rd evening.  That was thirteen days time and not so bad.  Am still missing #1 but that will probably come in a day or two.  I also received that package containing the V mail forms, ink and leads, the box of mints, starch and flour (for Brunet’s I presume).  Thank you ever so much for all the things, dearest.  This is one of the V mail forms now, the first one in fact from the package.  Everything arrived in good condition and the candy is excellent.  It is a long time since I have had any chocolate of some sort if you will as our candy ration has been cut down somewhat and you know I have a sweet tooth.  You might put in another/small pack of flour also for Brunet’s and a small box of baking powder (as they cannot get that here now either).  That jar of almond mints you sent once was very good also if you could get another.

Was glad to hear that you have finally received the missing letter of July 10th with the money orders.  It surely took it a long enough time to come.  I am going to send you a regular airmail letter next time and see how long it takes.  I have heard that they are going back by air again now to the states (but not this way).

And I cannot but say again that I was most pleased to hear that you have finished paying up the mortgage.  I’m waiting for you Sept. 1st letter telling me the details about it.  I suppose with the two hundred, I sent, you will have enough for the Sept. income tax installment without drawing any from your own savings account.  When are you going to be able to start a savings account for us.  Don’t forget to let me know each month what the balance is in it as I asked.  Why don’t you deposit Cranes’ checks each month in the savings account as you surely won’t need them for anything else with my monthly allotment.  Also are you going to have the account in the First National Bank?  I think you might as well as they have been very good to us and I have done most of my business with them for a long time.

I will be looking for the pictures you took of the house.  When is Dan going to have his operation which you mentioned.  The present for Don and Dorothy sounded all right.  There will be one for Bobby soon too.  I guess their family birthday will run all in a bunch almost.

I took most of this afternoon off and went up on the roof for an hour to sun, then I took a bath and am now writing to you.  I was out to one of my depots for lunch this noon as I had some business to take up with the battalion commander and the depot commanders at a meeting.  We had a very good lunch as we always do at that mess.  I getout there to eat with them about once a every week or two and if it is in the evening, sometimes stay on to see a movie if it is their night to have one.  They have traveling movies that go around from unit to unit.

Wednesday night I went up to the Red Cross theater, one block about the hotel, to see the weekly boxing matches.  I wrote you about them once before.  Aside from that I’ve not been out anyplace to write about.  Yesterday I wrote a letter to Aunt Sadie and Sylvia.  Am trying to get caught up slowly with my mail.

Well there isn’t much else to write about this time, darling, except how pleased I am the that the house is all paid for as I set here and look at the two pictures of it in front of me.  I hope by next year at this time that we shall be back in it again but am afraid that may be a somewhat optimistic hope unless Japan folds up quicker that most people think she will.

I see I’m nearing that red mark so must close for now.  All of my love to you, sweetheart, and all of my kisses for my darling wife.

                                                                                                            Devotedly,

                                                                                                                        Carlton
