Saturday Night

Dearest;

            Just came home from San Francisco. Now that I have a commuter’s book I sort of want to get to get my money’s worth of rides so I don’t mind going over there! You see, for $6.50 a month I get two rides seven days a week and field work ID [identification] only five - - I have my weekends off. What do you think of the set-up?

            Since I’ve been so busy this past week I really haven’t had time to tell you how thrilled I am over field work and the SF Dept. of Health. I hope my venture this semester will put me in good stead for a job next winter - - I really feel sure I’d get the experience I need. My district is going to be up on Fillmore Street, Buchanan, Eddy, Ellis, Sutter, and Post. It’s a shame you didn’t get to know this part of San Francisco while you were here!! My hours are 8:30 to 5 five days per week. This field experience is to put all our theory into practice and I’m sure that an awfully lot has been pure theory and nothing else. It is hard to imagine that even though such high salaries exist out here, misery exists side by side. Some of the things I’ve seen have been so depressing to me! I hope that I won’t bore you with too many weird tales of my daily ventures from now on, but I’ve never seen the like of some of the things I’ve met with this past week. One woman, whose husband has been overseas two years is 7 months pregnant - - just a sample of life?

Lots of love,

Berna Lou
