Dearest Ken,

This is the second time I’ve written to you this evening, that’s how you rate with me! Didn’t think to tell you about going to see the “out of state” attorney. Mr. Purcell had written to him regarding my residence status, as [the attorney] he had a fairly concise idea of what had been happening. The U.C. attorney says that nothing can be done because there is not a shred of evidence to show that you intended to come to Calif. before you were sent here per military orders, while Mr. Purcell showed me the case in which Military service, orders etc did not preclude residence- you are permitted to establish your residence any place even though you are in army. So the feud rages. I am very much afraid that I shall end up exactly where I started- nowhere. The point seems to be that the law is made, administered, and interpreted by the University to cover itself under any and all circumstances, especially in those pertaining to revenue.

Tomorrow afternoon Mr. Purcell will have talked with U.C. attorney and will tell me what else can be done.

Keep your fingers crossed,

Love,
Berna Lou
