Number eight

Darling lady,

Well we seem to be getting down to some sort of regular schedule of correspondence and the letters seem to be flying back and forth which is as it should be. I was to leave today but the airplane became tempermental and we had to delay until tomorrow. I will be unable to give you the details of the trip to where and from where since I received a nice long official letter yesterday about some of the boys and their discrepancies in their letter writing as to places and things and goings on. It makes it difficult for there is so much that could be written of interest to you. And then again the things that I am doing are what makes up the daily grind and news, but what can a guy do. You intrigue me with you army gossip that you didn’t tell me because of other eyes. Don’t bother about that for it makes no difference as long as you do not disclose the name and places of units outside the US, or any movement of troops. So dish it out for I am a fur piece away and interested.

I am truly disappointed that Louie Hughes is gone for I was counting on getting him. I received a letter from Jelly toady along with yours saying that he was now A-3 and not available since Charlie moved up to the front office. That also is very disappointing. I am going to try and work some deal anyway to get him. The Gulf Cst. will probably not like it but everyman for himself and they can well afford it compared to some of these other outfits. My success here depends on getting a couple of good men that I know to work with me. What do you think?

Honey about the post exchanges here and there supply of rugs, dishes etc. there just isn’t anything of that sort anymore. I never saw such depleted stock and shopworn equipment with little or noting to offer. Shipping space has become at a premium for non-essentials and after the stocks have been depleted in the exchanges that is the end except for toilet articles and such. I ever have a hard time getting pipe tobacco and am ordering it from the states. Magazines matches, states beer, cigars, candy and all the ordinary articles are becoming scarce or not at all. I can still send to Bolivia and such places for the tings that I mentioned and can get some of the Guatemala things because they are manufactured there. will do to, little bug.

My trunk has not arrived yet (no towels) and I am wondering if it will ever arrive. Lets hope so. You gloss over news to quickly in your letters, going to tell me some other time. Now is the time, never put off today etc., etc, You don’t know how welcome news is here. (And incidentally, turtle, they established those training wings some weeks before I left the GC, lets keep our news up to date, Turtle) as far as you giving Yount the right answers I am sure that you did for getting anything out of “Toots” that she does not wish to put out is a job for a better man than Yount. Even for me.

I didn’t get out to the race track as I told you last letter due to the press of things arising though today’s paper recorded a day of long shots. “Long Shot Day” I used to be known as and I wasn’t there. Neither did I get a lottery ticket last week. The town is mighty close by but seems an awfully hard place to get to. Nothing much missed nowadays though. I need another typewriter that spells better and skips less though I am sure that you get the vague idea. I will take command here starting next Monday from advice received this morning from Gen. Johnson. I should be back from my trip by that time also. My mail to you may take a gap of time getting to you during that time. I shall write just the same sweet Lady but I will have no power over the mails so we may fall back to the “weekly letter” delivery schedule for a short space. However it will be nice to come back to a nice pile of letters from you  -_--- (pile of letters).

I am already looking forward to that first trip home to you, though lord knows when it will be. You can rest assured it will be at the first opportunity that presents itself. I guess Weddington is going to retire in that hospital though one of these days they will get tired fooling with him and out he will go in a hurry. Especially since they are so busy nowadays it is more likely than not to be any day. Let me know when you hear anything on it.

Well honeybunch of mine, this enough for today and I must get back to the paper war at my desk before Uncle Sam docks me for diverting my efforts to more important things, the Fort Worth belle. Loads of love dear from me to you.

P.S.

Sent you a money order two letters ago – did you receive?
