9/6/43- Monday noon

Dear Mother,

Well, I guess you are sort of lonesome now that the children are gone.  Hope Uncle William will stay with you until you get straight.  Got your last letter yesterday and enjoyed it.  Glad you got another shower and hope you get some more soon.  Hope cotton is opening right along.  Luther wrote that your crops look better than the average around there, so hope they turn out better than expected.  Have you still got the car?

Tell Luther to keep the dog if he wants him, or if he doesn’t, ask Joe to be on the watchout for a sale for him.  The beagle man from Covington wanted him last year; however, I’d rather not sell him if some one will keep him.  Luther wrote to sell him if I wanted to, but if he wants him let him have him.  I’d like to see him when I get back if he’s still living, and Ester can see him too!  Well, I’ve just gotten of a 24 hour round of Guard Duty, and hope that will be all for awhile!  I didn’t have time to go to church yesterday.  We had a 12-mile hike with “Full-field Packs” last week, but stood it ok.  Otherwise, the week was pretty easy.  We go out on the Riffle Range Thursday, Friday, and Saturday to shoot 200, 300, and 500 yards, so don’t know whether I’ll do as good this time or not at 500 yards!

Looks like Joe is doing plenty of camping this year, but guess he will get to work again now!!  Hope they left a few squirrels until I get back.  Guess the river is almost dry now?!

The latest “rumor” is that our Rig (323rd) is going to Fort Benning, Ga., as a demonstration unit for the OCS students.  Hope it’s true, for that would mean that we stay over there a while longer.

Send this paper onto Roy if you like.  This is all I can think of now, so good-bye!

                                                                                                Love,

                                                                                                        Russell
