June 20, 1945 – Wed – 6 PM

Dear Mom,

By the time this reaches you I will probably be in or very near Memphis, for I leave here about noon tomorrow. I go in an ambulance to Atlanta and catch a 5 PM train there and will have a compartment from there on, so the trip should be very nice.  I signed my discharge this PM so will be a free man again, as soon as I reach Memphis, and will be able to tell all the “Sergeants” and “Lieutenants” what I think of them if the occasion ever arises!!

Enjoyed your long letter today, and also one from Luther and Ester.  Too bad the rain keeps up, but I haven’t noticed in the paper where it rained there the past few days, so maybe they work some how.

The “Ladies Business Circle” sent me a 2˝ lb. box of candy yesterday so I guess I’ll just carry it along with me for future use.  You forgot to take the pecans so I gave them to one of the Negro porters to-nite.  Guess he will enjoy them.

My head hasn’t hurt a bit today so maybe it will behave for awhile now.  Feel fine all over! The boy across the hall is still living but pretty bad off.

Bill Short sent me another com-appeal that I enjoyed today.  Even saw my name in it, when you and Sallie had been here!

My WAC friend is working in another ward so I have only seen her once this week, when she stopped by to say hello.

Today has been pretty here and pleasant.  It’s warming up again now though!  They had nice showers most everywhere so things are pretty.

To save me I can’t think of anything else to say, so will sign off here, my last G.I. “free” letter to you!  I even bought me some stamps this PM!  I’ll let you know when I reach my next station and maybe I’ll see you soon.

                                                                                    Love, Russell
