Dear Sis and Bill,
Don’t worry about me smoking a lot for I have only smoked two cigarettes since I have been here. Betty doesn’t usually smoke that much, I was as surprised as you; I believe she was just nervous.
I believe we will just be able to finish in the 8 weeks. There are too many men coming in every day to take longer than 10 days.
The way the Chief Petty Officer chose the platoon leader was; he asked the men who thought they could lead a platoon to try. They all tried and he picked myself and another man.
