Georg Karl was a German Artillery soldier and his letters encompass the period between 1940 and 1944. The vast majority of the letters are written to Thea Bohm, who was initially his girlfriend and later, after April 1943, his wife. Georg Karl was promoted through the ranks and served in Artillery Regiment 67.
He saw combat in the Soviet Union, was wounded, and spent time in War Hospital 907. From there he was promoted from Gefreiter to Unteroffizier and went on to Teaching group III Artillery School for officer candidates. Following his training, he was posted to Artillery Ers Regiment 49. He later went into combat again with Artillery Regiment 68, during 1943 and 1944. It was during this time that he received his promotion to Lieutenant. The letters between Georg and Thea come to an abrupt halt in June 1944. Georg writes about the coming invasion and how their lives will be different after the invasion occurs. We do not know if Georg Karl survived the war. |
