Somewhere in France

June 29, 1944

Dear Mom,

This is the first chance I’ve had to drop a line.  We are now in France and everything is going along swell.  We have made living arrangements and are pretty comfortable.  I am getting plenty to eat and lots of rest.

I certainly am glad I took French in school.  I met an old fellow last night and talked with him.  Today one of the other fellows and I met two French women washing clothes and we are going to wash ours at the same place this after noon.  I had quite a conversation with them and surprised myself that they understood me and I could understand them.  I asked them about living conditions under the Germans and from what they said it was pretty rugged. They said they had a radio and used to listen to British and American broadcasts.

Don’t worry about me, everything is OK, and I am well and very content.

I’ll write more when I have a chance.

Love

Jack.
