Belgium

Dear Mom,

Just a line or two to let you know that everything is O.K [and that] I’m very comfortably situated. There are special service movies nearby and today we’re going to a U.S.O show. We’re in a Rest Period. Last night I saw Ingrid Bergman and Charles Boyer in “Gas Light.” I didn’t know it at the time but found out that it was made from “Angel Street,” which I saw in New York when I was there last [time]. (The play I mean) It was very good and very much like the play.

I certainly do hope by this time my packages have arrived. I’m very anxious to know that they got thru O.K. You said Anne seemed so pleased. I knew she’d like to have something from this side of the world. I haven’t heard from her for about 2 months now, and perhaps it’s just as well, for as I told you, I have no serious intentions with Anne. I told her that before I left the states. Over here things appear in a different light as I knew they would. I would never want to marry anyone unless I was sure, for when I marry it’s going to be for good. There are so many things that enter marriage that it’s important to consider them all and lots of them are against Anne (more than in her favor). And although I know she thinks a lot of me, I just don’t think it would work out.

There was a slight pause here. I went to the U.S.O show, and it was very good. Maybe back in the states it wouldn’t seem like the best of entertainment, but here anything along those lines hits the spot.

I’ll try to make my next letter longer and I’ll check up to find out just what items censorship has been lifts. Maybe I’ll be able to tell you some of my experience.

            So long for now.

Love,

      Jack
