June 3rd – Schleusingen Germany

Dear Mom –

I’ve finally got around to drop a line – I haven’t been busy – just lazy I guess – I really should write more often – Your letters have been coming in good time – six or seven days in fact – best service we’ve ever had – We’re not far from our headquarters now (a month ago we were over 200 miles from them) and that helps a lot – all our mail goes thru H’d’qts and when we’re so far apart it delays the mail coming in + going out –

I’ve been going to the dentist and having my teeth put in shape.  I really ad a lot of work to be done – it had been quite a while since we had the opportunity for dental work – I’m approaching the finishing line now –

I’ve been spending my time reading, sleeping, writing, walking about, a movie now and then – fishing – swimming – and even working once in a while – Printed some pictures too – Will send some soon –

We’re not very busy – some of our own men are having their tonsils out and we get a few minor cases – but nothing much – I work once in four or five nights – As you probably know there is a law against fraternizing with Germans – so I have little to do with them – I do talk to some of them occasionally however – I’m studying German under one of the officers in this platoon – and learning quite a it. I really did pretty good in France + Belgium with my French – surprised myself –

My darling is fine – sweet as ever though of course it is still difficult for me to see her often – these fool rules about officers + enlisted men!  Makes me mad sometimes.  I’m sending a couple of new pictures – Isn’t she lovely? –

We still don’t know what’s to become of us – whether we’ll stay together as a unit or not – Whether we’ll be occupation troops or not – whether we’ll go to the Pacific thru the Suez Canal or by way of the states – (We’ll go though – one way or another -) I do wish I could go home for a little while though – but don’t get any high hopes – I may see Gene before I see you –

Heard from Vogt – he’s in Germany somewhere – I asked him to come + see me if he can – and in not to far away.

Incidentally our mail is no longer being censored by the unit so I can be a little more lenient in what I say – It is still subject to Base Censorship but only a spot check is done there – not by any one I know either – that helps –

Nice to hear that Aunt Kate has her lights now – It will be grand for her.  Do write me the details I asked for about the house + land etc – as to taxes etc.

I have several other letters I must write so I’d better sign off for now – I’ll write again soon –

                                    Love,

                                    Jack
