The Lipton collection of letters consists of seventeen letters written by Ike Lipton to his girlfriend, Louise Ray, and one letter written by Louise. The letters begin in 1943 while they were both in high school, in North Carolina. The letters continue while Louise attends Mars Hill College and Ike is in the military. The last letter in the collection is one written by Louise. On the outside of the envelope it reads "deceased." At this time, Ike was in the 394th Infantry fighting in Europe.
