Dear Mom,

Sorry for having not written you for a week—don’t have any excuse—just plain laziness, I guess.

No, I wasn’t on a honey moon up in Coventry.  What on earth ever gave you any idea like that?

I had a day off yesterday, it was wonderful weather, so [I] went bike riding all day.  Saw some Italian prisoners of war.  Tried to talk with them but all they could say was “American Soldier” and, of course, I didn’t know one word of Italian.

                                                                                                            Write soon,

                                                                                                            Love, John
