Somewhere in dear old Germany,

26 June 1945.

Dear Mom,

Received a letter from you today, so decided I would answer it.

It has been raining here a little bit today.

Too bad about Grant not being able to make a go at the sawmill, but it is a pretty tough job to make a sawmill pay. I have to figger pretty close.

I finally ran onto some leads for my pencil. I can use them but they are pretty short for my pencil, I’ll be glad when yours come.

We have nice living quarters here. It must have been a communications Center used by the Germans. We all have rooms with about 2 or 3 men in each. Floors are all covered with linoleum - marble stairways, French windows, bathrooms.  It is pretty classy. Some of the rooms have radios in them.

We are starting to get furloughs now.  I hope I get one to England.  I would go and look up my little red head, ha ha! I am going on pass to Charlaror (sp?) the 1st of July for three or four days. Things are getting pretty good over here now. We get plenty of time off and don’t have to do much work.

Got a letter from Polly today. They are about the same as much I guess.

Write soon,

Love, John
