Camp Grant, Ill

Oct. 20, 1942

Dear Mother:

Had a lot of fun today.  But you don’t have fun everyday.  I was on detail today.  That’s the work gang, and the sergeant assigns you to work at a certain place.

Today I was at the camp canteen for the service men to clean up the kitchen.

I helped clean floors, polish tables, fill napkin holders, clean and wash garbage cans, clean the kitchen floor, polish the refrigerators and eat.  And did we eat.  The waitresses gave us lemon cream pie, hamburgers, hot dogs, coca colas or whatever else we wanted.  And all we wanted.  So I didn’t go to chow tonight, because I’m still full.

We work 2 hours in the morning and 2 hours in the afternoon.  So it isn’t so bad.  And you have a lot of fun sometimes.  Course the drilling isn’t much fun.

But when you get used to it, it’s alright.

A lot of the boys are leaving, but not me.

A couple of boys in my barracks are enlisted as airplane mechanics and asked to be sent to Kelly Field, Texas.  But, I’ll probably be here awhile ‘till there’s an opening.

If I come home Saturday, tell Harriet I’d like some more fudge.  I fed some of it to the corporal and orderly, and they seemed to like it.  These guys have a lot to do in getting a weekend pass.

I told him if I got home Saturday I could get some more. And he said he got the idea.  So I don’t know. If I’m not on K.P. or sent out, I’ll be home.

Your Son,

Melvin
