Mon. Feb. 19

Dear mom and Dad,

Well, we have completed the first leg of our journey. I can’t say much as all mail is censored from here out.

It sure was nice at Fort Ord. The chow is still swell here. All we can eat. Sure gave me a haircut. There’s none left on the sides or back, and it’s about ½ an inch on the top. Everybody looks the same though so it isn’t so bad. It sure is no trouble to take care of this way. I finally got rid of my cold. Don’t know for how long though. I’m not used to this kind of weather. If you see Grandad Clause tell him hello for me. I don’t know how long we will be here. Probably not long.

I got 3 shots at Ord about 5 seconds apart. It didn’t bother me at all. It made some of the boys pretty sick.

Should see the nice combat boots they gave us. They are very similar to paratroopers’ boots. We are really all set now, and raring to go.

Mom, will you mail one of my big pictures to this address please?

I promised her one and she is home again now. She sure is a sweet girl. I wish you could have met her.

Well, there’s not much else to say for now. Tell Nana hello for me and that I will write her soon. Take care of yourself and I will do the same.

            Love to all,

            Jack
