Berlin Germany

Dear Elva:

Well here it is another Sunday here in Germany and it is a very beautiful afternoon but as usual I am here in the office slaving away on the boys that are to be sent home soon and I don’t mind it one bit as I know that it won’t be long until I myself will be on my way home myself[.] I was told to be ready to turn my job over to someone else by the end of next month, so you will without a doubt be seeing me up around Westbrook one of the days[.] I am planning to be discharged at Fort Dix in N.J. and then I will call you the first chance I get when I get there.

Gosh it don’t seem possible that things happen so fast in the army and with the thought of going home boy I will sure be sweating the days and hours out so I am going to keep real busy so the time will fly[. W]e have not been doing much but work here since we got to Berlin[;] I have toured the city and saw all the points of interest so there is not much else to do but go to a show or to the beer garden[. B]y the way I had my first American beer the other night[;] it sure tasted good after drinking all the wine and other stuff that they have over here[. W]hen we were in [H]ochst we use to get Champaign for about forty cents a bottle very inexpensive and I for one got tired of the stuff imagine any one tiring of Champaign I wish that I could of sent some of it home.

The souvenirs here are getting hard to get and so many of them that I have sent never reached their destination so I am not going to send any more but will have something real nice for you when I see you[. I]s there anything in particular that you would like to have[;] let me know I will try and get it for you[.] [H]ave you received the picture I sent you yet[?] [F]ilm is getting hard to get here and cameras are going sky high[.] [W]e use to get a good camera for a package of cigarettes but the Russians have flooded the market and so no cameras[.] [W]e have opened a beach club at one of the most exclusive spots around Berlin and it is very nice with nice white sand and a beautiful lake with sail boats and canoes all over[.] I only wish it was not the end of the swimming season[;] I sure would take advantage of it[.] [A]lso we have quite a few night clubs that the army has taken over and the boys are taking them in stride[.] [L]ast night the WAC that is my secretary and am a crowd of us went to one and we sure had some time but today everyone is more or less on the hangover side[.] [H]ow is the social season doing around Westbrook[?] I suppose that it is just about all over and with all the boys coming home its should get back to its natural stride soon[.] [N]ext week we have our opening football game and it should be quite a thing as we have a band and cheer leaders and all the trimmings[.] I don’t think I will be around to play any this time but I can pass this up and not feel bad about it as I am coming home. Well Elva as this is about all the news I will sign off for this time and again with all my love I still remain.

                                                                        As ever
