Dear Mama,

Enclosed is my insurance policy.  I had it made [out] to you. Every soldier has to take out insurance. If anything [happens] to me you get fifty two dollars a month as long as you live. If something happens to you, Gladys gets it.  I made it plain that the monthly checks I receive you get, then [you] don’t have to give Emma anything out of them. They told me the Government will give her twelve dollars a month for the child so don’t give any one money, tell them to see me. My officer told me what to do.  He is from Merchantville. I may be station in front Fort Dix here.  It won’t be long before they send you the papers to sign for the payroll, now don’t mix up my birth Oct 17, 1916 [because] if you do you will hold up the pay.  I haven’t received the money yet, mail travel [is] slow from Fort Dix because it is much of it.  I send old Joe a letter too.  Now put this insurance policy away and send me some money about two or three dollars, maybe you have all ready sent it.  I’ll be home soon on a furlough for a two day stay.
