Pay Day- 1943

Dear Mom:

Got your letters yesterday, was taken back abit when I saw two from you.  Learned the reason when I read them.

There is not much news around here except that I have been trying to talk to Mr Thom (my boss) about a transfer back to Atlanta or a raise.  We have been so busy I have not had much of a chance to speak to him.  I’ll catch him though.

I don’t know whether there is much chance of me getting one but it won’t hurt to try.  You never know what you can do until you try so I’ll put the problem to him.  He can’t do anything but refuse.  I’ll let you know how I come out.

Mom, here is the usual amount.  Sorry it cannot be more.  Mother, I am going to have to save some from somewhere, as you know I am going to have to pay nearly $150.00 income tax and I may have to stop sending the money every payday and bank $10 a month.  That is something that I have to pay and I won’t clear so very much when I am called.  I may not be able to send any home until I graduate.  I know its hard but I only have so much and down here I can’t stretch it very far.  Everything costs so much.

Write me what you want to do about it.  You are just going to have to make some changes about your room renting.  You are being jipped by your sister and the fellow.  You are going to have to make some changes sooner or later so why not be thinking about it now.  You could have 2 people in each room instead of one.  I can’t help it if you won’t listen to reason and get what you can while you can.  Think it over and remember taxes are as certain as death.

I don’t know when I will be home again but I will try.

Love,

Roy

Here is a buck for Ben, I am in foul shape but I can remember how I wished I had some money a lot of times when I was his age.  Please give 5 bucks of this to Aunt Cora with my thanks.  I owe it to her.
