Dear Ben:

Got your letter today and was glad to hear from you again. You are getting so you can write fine keep it up son. You can print and write also, you would be surprised to see how many people cannot print.

I am glad you are enjoying the candy, it is pretty hard to get out here too. WE can only buy 5 bars most of the time, I just hit it lucky and got a box. I sent some Beech-nut chewing gum too, it should be there before long, it is pretty hard to get too. Hope it gets there o.k.

Today I was issued my new flying equipment. I got a new parachute, those big fur-lined leather flying pants and jacket, a leather fur-lined helmet, furlined boots, a light weight summer helmet, goggles, gloves, a big canvas bag to carry all that in and a big folding bag to carry my uniform in. It is a good deal, the army is really good to you. They give you $250.00 to buy your uniforms with. Not bad eh?

We’ll have to go down to the school and the teachers.

Say Bud, I found out today that I will be a Lieutenant, they posted the list today ones who were made Flight Officers. A Flight Officer is one grade below a Lieutenant.

I received the box with all the things in it and also the carmals, they were really swell, thanks a lot son. Tell Mom the boys in the barracks really enjoyed the pecan fingers and all the other stuff. Better close now, I have to figure out a night cross-country trip to El Paso, Texas.

See you in a couple weeks I hope.

                                                                                    Love,

                                                                                        Roy
