Dear Mom:

I am now a resident of Kingman Army Air Field, and beyond a shadow of a doubt, it is the worst place in the nation, excepting maybe, Marana, Arizona.  The wind blows all of the time and it carried dust with it always.  There’s absolutely nothing to do here and nowhere to go, so I’ll probably be raving mad before very long.  Haven’t the slightest idea how long I will be here, but you can rest assured that I’ll get out the first chance I get.

Say Mom, what’s th8is about Frances saying that she’s going to marry me after the war?  Did she tell you that or did Mrs. Fletcher?  I suspect Mrs. F did!  Let me know something, at least people should tell the groom about it don’t you think?  I should have a little say in the matter.

Nope, I don’t hear from Bettie B. anymore, she didn’t write often enough for someone who’s supposed to be in love, so I told her so and also so long.  The girl in Albuquerque is still kicking I suppose, haven’t heard form her in quite sometime so I can’t swear to it.  She’ll most likely be an old maid.

Hear from Ann Spear, you know, the girl who came to see you while she was working in Atlanta.  She’s from Forsyth you know.  She is now in Washington, D.C. working at the library of Congress.

Also hear from Uncle Ben occasionally and Linda Williams, a girl he knows at the phone Co. in Jacksonville.  She’s only 17, but you were too when Pop was 22, and I can wait.  She sounds like a fine girl, might have to go down and see her if I ever get home again, which seems a little doubtful at the present time.

I am supposed to be here to fly gunners in B-17’s and I should know Monday just what I will do.  Hope I hurry and get started as I don’t care for this place at all.

You asked who the guys in the pics are, ones Wiggans and the other is Weber.  Haven’t heard from John yet, we left before he got back form leave and I didn’t know his home address.

Tell Ben that that I may be able to take you all for a ride if I get a leave, I took the required written exam and got my civilian pilot certificate already.  I can fly planes from 200 up to 6000 horsepower.  If I want to fly a smaller ship I’ll have to get checked out and get my rating lowered.

No Mom, the stem wasn’t in the box.  I lost it somewhere so I guess they will have to put another one in.

Is Ben traveling alone now?  That’s amazing if he is, I would never have thought it.  Times sure change don’t they?  Wish I was down there with him though.  I would rather go hunting now than eat I guess.

Better close I guess, too hot to even write.

Love to all,

Roy
