Mae Westfall worked for a radio station in Cleveland, Ohio. Most of the early letters in the collection were written by Mae and a soldier named Walter Knie. Mae and Walter were engaged to be married, however, they broke off their relationship. Walter Knie died on March 3, 2003 at the age of 86. After breaking up with Walt, Mae corresponded with a sailor named Paul Kolaida. It is not yet known what became of Mae Westfall or Paul Kolaida.
