My dearest Hal,

I wish you could be here with us this Sunday night. We are listening to Frank Munn on the radio and eating peppermint ice cream.  We don’t have sugar for making sweets but you have no idea how clever Mother is about finding substitutes.  This is made with candy.  Candy is scarce too so maybe we can’t even do that.  I hope for Sam’s sake, he can still get an ice-cream cone occasionally.  He loves it so.  I can and should give him my share for I’m too fat any way.

Darling, I love you so much.  Even at this great distance nothing can change or dull the everlasting longing I feel to hold you closely and never to have to be separated again.  At times like this memories flood back of all the nights and days we’ve spent so happily and make me know we will have many, many more.  I think that when we are together again we will have learned to treasure even more carefully those precious happy moments and we will take special care to let no thoughtless word or deed add unhappiness but work for a better understanding of each other that will make us completely and lastingly happy.

                                                                                                All my love,
