Dearest Hal – This is a lovely spring day even if spring was ushered in with an all day snow storm. The 21st – most of the snow melted as it fell but it turned to near freezing at night and all the trees were covered – 32º for two nights then Tuesday it all melted and yesterday it was 48º - You have never told us what flowers you see in India or is it too hot for them? – I have had four letters from Billy – his address has changed the 3rd time- is now 6Po 776 – 2nd Replacement Depot instead of 6Po 759 – He says his work keeps him very busy but he likes it - and he sees a great deal that is interesting there. Says they have gotten their field kitchens set up now so they eat better - He told of buying three oranges from an Arab for a nickel when he could only get one for a dime – says he thumbs a ride to one of the towns, when he has any time, to see what he can see – Says he can talk a little French to them to let them know what he means – Sara and H.N. came by Tuesday on their way from Richmond and spent one night here. - Eliz. could not come but is coming up with Wilbur Apr 18th as he goes to Roanoke to Dental Con. And will spend a few days – war on the home front gets worse and worse about whether to defer forward, taxes etc. I think they should draft everybody for the thing they can do best and get the war over the quickest way – so many shirkers- not fair to the soldiers – all my love to you - Mother
