“Somewhere in England”
3rd March 44
Dear Catty:
Still haven’t received any mail from anyone, and do I miss it? Of course. I realize that it isn’t anyone’s fault; it’s just that the transportation facilities aren’t too adequate and consequently, delay the delivery. One of these days I hope to get above Thirty letters, fifty newspapers, my walet + some pictures we took in Texas at a company party.
For the past three days, I’ve offered some amusement to the battalion, and if you could see my haircut, I’m sure you’d “die laughing” too. It isn’t exactly a “bowl job” but I never again tell and English barber to “shave my neck”. He went all the way around + up rather high too, so if you can visualize this descriptive picture, you’ll know what it looks like.
Went to a dance nevertheless last night and had a fair time. The band is still a better attraction than the actual dancing, in my opinion. I did find one girl who could somewhat dance with me. At intermission, one of the officers and I went to a “Fish + Chips” store, and ate an order of peas and potatoes chips, or “french fries” we call them. They’re pretty good too + cost only four pence (8 cents) per order.
Catty, for my information, and to avoid embarrassing situation in he future; will you inform me of your birthday, mas, Aunt Irene, Joes, + Emma Lees, if she’s with you yet. If she hasn’t, send the rest of them. Even if I’m unable to send a present, I can send greetings.
The weather is some warmer, but I still have a bad cold. Otherwise I’m feeling fine + getting plenty to eat. I weigh 188 now, of in England, 14 stoves 8lbs. Enclosed is a bit of literature Charlie C. sent me some time ago. You may find it amusing.
Well Catty, guess That’s about all for today. Tell Joe + Aunt Irene “hello” + write often.
Love-
Urban
