My Dearest Ken,
Yesterday I ended a discussion of a mundane topic-
birth control. Remember? This morning I visited Maternal Clinic at San Francisco
City and County Hosp. So many of the patients were young, sweet, and
well-dressed girls and upon asking the Nurse In Charge if these were regular
“clinic” pts, she explained that many were under the government’s “Emergency
Maternity and Infant Care” Program- the “Emic” plan
which is for the union of the armed forces of 4 lowest grades. All maternity
services are paid for by federal funds. This is exactly what it should be. The
cream of our crop going away to war should be encouraged to have a family if
they want it, and federal money should be used to give the Mother and baby the
very finest of care or the same thing will happen to the U.S. that happened to
France. SF. Maternity Clinic serves to
give beautiful care to their patients during the whole maternity cycle, from
the conception of the baby until it has had its immunizations. All this is just
ones of the many branches of service rendered by the Public Health Nurse.
Love Berna Lou
