Monday
Night
Dearest Ken;
Had quite a busy day; really time goes much faster
since I’m gone all day than it did before. In exactly two weeks I have to give
a case study. Seems that a lot is expected of college graduates anymore, huh?
Today I visited Tuberculosis contacts and persuaded them to go to SFHospital
Chest Clinic for X-ray. One very nice young man didn’t speak any English, but
since I’ve made out some questions to ask in Spanish, he did understand what I
wanted, “el pecho.” He promised to go to CC, so all I can do is to wait. Have
really seen some sights on Fillmore Street! Do you remember that street?
From one until five this afternoon I had to observe
in VD clinic, which is on Hunt Street, which is just off Mission St. This is
the city clinic and the PHN’s job is to interview patients, explain nature of
their illness, investigate the epidemiology and secure a list of contacts. All
this takes an impersonal attitude on our part to get the patient to see the
Public Health viewpoint and not develop the idea that we are getting “nibby”.
After I’ve spent more time in that type of work I
feel sure I’ll enjoy it.
Found out that my studying days aren’t over; there’s
more to learn now than ever!
Love
as ever, Berna Lou
