Dear Walt,
Surprised
to be hearing from me? Well I thought I’d drop a line, since I expect you’ll
soon be going to Officers Candidate School,
and would be moving from Fort
Sheridan.
I received
a card from Dick several weeks ago and I thought perhaps you would send me his
address in Miami, Florida so that I can write him. He
mentioned in his card that he had just gone to South Carolina to see Barbara. It is swell to know they are still within visiting distance even
though he is in training. And speaking of Air Cadets we have about 300 here in Cleveland that just came up from Florida. They are training now at the Fenn
Tower. Fenn college has practically all been turned over to them
now. By this summer we expect to have over 1,000 cadets. Who knows perhaps Dick
might come here too.
Needless to
say the Stage Door Canteen is really plenty busy these nights. Next Saturday
the 300 cadets will march up en masse. And since I am in charge of the Check
Room I must prepare an auxiliary Check Room to accommodate them. It really is
fun even though it takes all my time just knowing the fellows are enjoying
themselves.
All the
servicemen who have been to The Stage Door Canteens in New
York and Hollywood and Washington still think
ours is the best so we really are proud of it. I hope
you can get to Cleveland
and see it sometime Walt.
By the way,
I read about Fort
Sheridan the other day in
some special reference material which we have at the station and it really must
be a lovely place to see – almost like a beautiful park I’d say. You are
fortunate to have such pleasant surroundings. I’ll bet it is really going to be
grand in the spring.
Since
everything is quite the same here, there isn’t much to write and I must be
leaving shortly for the Canteen so I’ll be closing for now. Here’s hoping you
are feeling swell and write soon and send me.
