Sunday May 30
My Darling Wife
10:15
This is the
first Sunday I have spent on this camp that really seemed like Sunday. I got up
about 7:45 and went to no. 4 mess hall (where you ate dear) and had breakfast.
It was the best breakfast I have had on this field. I had pig sausage, hotcake,
dry cereal, doughnuts, and an orange. Then I came back and turned my laundry in
and straightened up my suit case, and cleaned up everything in general. I have
my own little house- cleaning every few days. Most of the fellows came home
last night. All the base was off last night so everyone had to be fed this
morning. They had to mess halls open and they were really busy. We didn’t have
to march or take calisthenics or anything. It is almost like being at Pecos. Of course
we have to be in bed at 1:45 today because we have school tonight. I hope we
have Monday evening off as we are supposed to when we change shifts. About three
of us are planning on renting a car and driving out to Ashland to see the fellows there.
Yesterday after
finishing your letter we went to Daltons
and had waffles and bacon. There are quite a few nice kids in this barracks and
I went to town with two of them. One of their names is Robert Smitz. He is a small kid and is married. His wife is in
Calif. His house is in Calif. but he is
originally from Montana.
We rented a 1940 ford sedan about 6:30 and just drove around town enjoying
ourselves. When it got dark enough so that we needed lights we noticed that
they weren’t working so we went back to the garage and told the fellow. He
didn’t know what was wrong so I was in my glory. I got a light from him and I
began snooping around. I found the trouble and had it fixed in a enough minutes. He was surprised and wanted to know if I
had learned that at school here. I told him that I knew a little about cars
long before I even came here. I washed my hands and then we left again. We went
out to a place called Capitol
Beach. There is a skating
rink, dance floor, and all the things that a carnival has. Walked through it a
couple of times and left. It was around twelve and we wanted to get the car
back. I don’t know where the “Beach” was; at last I didn’t see any.
We took the
car back and it only cost $5.13 about 1.6 cents a piece. We got a bus and came
home then. I know what you are thinking. That we picked up some babes and had a
wild old time but we didn’t. We spent a bachelors evening. Just minding our own
business and that’s all.
I forgot to
tell you about how my sunburn bothered me. After eating at Daltons I just had to get something for it so
I went to Walgreens and got some Moxema. I took it to
the USO and put some on my chest. It soothed it a little and felt much cooler.
I really had a crowd around me in the USO restroom. Everyone was dumbfounded at
how bad I was burned. Honestly dear it was actually crimson. Its
still slightly red and sore. The sun isn’t out today but I wish it was so I
could get my back burned a little.
Ill just lie around and
take it easy today. I may play a little soft ball if enough of the fellow will
play.
I’m getting the coke habit dear, we only had
about four in the past day or so but I feel like I want them all the time. The
only thing that stops me from having too many is my budget.
Some
fellows are shipping out of here to Balling in Seattle at 1:00 today. Gosh darling why
couldn’t I be that lucky. If I don’t get sent to school before I graduate I don’t
know just where will go. I haven’t taken my gunners exam yet and I’m not going
to tell them about it. I would sort of like to go to
factory school for 40 days and than see what sort of field I _, and where. I
guess time will tell wont it dear.
I’m not
sure if mail will be delivered today or not, but if it does I will probably
save it to answer tomorrow.
Darling don’t you get peeved because
I drove around town. I still haven’t been around as much or stayed out as late
as you have. I love you so much darling that you don’t have to worry about me
being bad
Ill say
good-bye for now my dear and maybe ill have some mail on my bed when I get
back. If I don’t, I will go ahead and mail this
All
my love dearest
Your
husband
Glenn
p.s. how are my free letters coming thru dear? If they are
too long, Ill
send them a.m.
