Sun. Aug. 19th

Dear Fran:

Received three letters from you today and one from Dad. Yesterday I didn’t get any but if I had I wouldn’t have had time to read them. I started K.P. about 4:30 in the morning and finished about 6:00 that evening after which time our barracks was on guard duty. I had to walk guard from 2 in the morning until 4:00 Everyone that wasn’t walking guard was on alert therefor no one could leave the barracks. We carry our rifles with fixed bayonet but no ammunition in other words if you halted some one and they didn’t stop you very politely stuck the bayonet through them, nice heh. I received your money order which was badly needed but since its Sunday it doesn’t do me much good today but that should make it last that much longer. Bob was in town last night but since I was on guard duty couldn’t go with him. His wife was supposed to come this week end but postponed it until next week end. He reserved a room in the Hotel Dempsey in Macon so I guess they will spend there time right there. It’s now Monday and I’ll finish this letter. Today I had no mail, what’s the matter I thought you wrote every day, Well its OK I’m not giving you hell because I don’t write every day myself but I really think you have more time than I. Yesterday afternoon Bob, Norm, and myself went to Lakeside Park, its nothing more than a lake with a couple of pavilions arounds to buy food and drinks and some nickels machines to spend your money. Your probably worring already because you think there’s women there well naturally there are some but to every woman around here there’s probably about 15 G.I. Joe’s and anyway I’m behaving myself, honest, so please don’t worry your little head dear. Today we were in the field all day we had classes on booby traps and explosives along with practical work. We had to set our own booby traps then remove someone elses with out setting them off. Even thought the charge was only small it was enough to blow a couple of fingers off if you didn’t take the proper precautions. We had dinner in the field but at chow at night in the Mess Hall. Tomorrow I am table waiter but that isn’t a bad job. Haven’t heard any more about our training program so can’t give you any dope on it. I’d give any thing if you could be down here with but I guess it can’t be so I’ll have to wait until Dec. unless something in our favor changes this plan. I cashed your money order Sun. and after loaning Bob a dollar I don’t think I have but about 50¢ left but thats not a hint you save your money, if you can, and when I go broke I’ll borrow and pay when I get paid the end of this month. I have to pay about $1.00 a week for dry cleaning as the laundry sends it back looking worse than when you send it. I told you in my other letter about my teeth well I was supposed to go back tonight but didn’t go. Those dentists are a bunch of butcher and they have me scared to death but I’m going to have to go sooner of later so I might just as well make up my mind to go. Well honey I think I’ll close and hit the sack, I owe Dad a letter but it will have to wait until tomorrow as I’m pretty tired after that long march we had today. I mustn’t forget to remember to tell you I still love you and always will so be a good girl and I promise I’ll be a good boy. Tell your folks I said hello also Janie and my friends. If you call home tell my folks, Verna and Judy, Gran I sent my love and I’ll write soon. I’d give my right arm for one of your big kisses now.

XXXXX

With all my love,

Your honey.
