My darling Fran:
Well dear
I’m still waiting for my assignment. Yesterday went all went down to
Headquarters and had another interview by the Colonel so possibly in a day or
so I can tell you whether I’m going out in the field or go to school first.
Remember when we were at Hamilton Field I told you Stanley
put in for discharge well it was turned down and who walks in last night but Stanley. He flew over to Hickam Field by A.T.C. and stayed two days then flew on to
Guam and stayed 10 or 12 days and the Navy flew him over from Guam.
I signed up for my beer rations so if we get it today I suppose there will be a
party in our room tonight. Honey don’t worry about what I drink because the
beer we get comes from the States and what Japanese liquor we receive is all analyzed
first so other than that I won’t buy any. We are allowed 30 cans of beer every
two weeks and its Schlitz’s it costs 38 yen for 30 cans that’s equal to about
8¢ a can American money. That cable I sent you cost
about $2.60 or 55 yen so that isn’t too bad. You can send one in 8
hours but the price almost doubles the one I sent was supposed to have arrived
in 48 hours. Yesterday after we finished our interview we visited “Ernie Pyles” theatre, they have a coffee shop in the basement
where the G.I. gets free coffee and cakes or doughnuts. I talked before about
the swell service; I forgot to mention they even give you the morning paper
with your breakfast, “The Stars and Stripes” it has a pretty good account on what’s
happening back in good old U.S.A.
Over here you can get almost anything done for a candy bar or cigarettes.
Yesterday I gave one of the Jap maids a candy bar to wash and iron two of my
shirts and they do a good job too. You can get equivalent to .66 2/3
¢ for a candy bar that costs us .03¢ and $2.00
for a pack of cigarettes that costs us .05¢. We are rationed here;
we are allowed 1 carton of cigarettes per week and 7 candy bars and two packs
of gum a week. Although there’s plenty of that stuff I guess they ration it to
keep the black market down. I just had my hair cut this morning and these Japs give you a very nice haircut that’s also cheap 5 yen
or .33¢. The medium of exchange here is 15 yen equals $1.00
American money. The weather here during the day is very nice just like spring
but at night it gets cold as hell. Well dear I’m sure you realize I love you
more than anything in the world so be good and give my
regards to your folks and our friends,
With
all my love,
Your honey.
