My darling wife:-
Just
finished playing poker so before I turn in I’ll jot down a few lines and tell
my honey I still love her. We started playing poker at 5:30 and just finished
up now although we did stop to eat supper. I lost 100 yen, isn’t that awful.
After all it’s about the only past time there is around here unless you go to
the movies and most of them I’ve seen two years ago. Yesterday and today I
didn’t receive any mail; maybe the mail man quit his job. I inquired yesterday
at the Post Office about my packages and the only information I could get was
the fact that I’d receive them sometime. Last night if you remember I
told you I was in charge of quarters. I didn’t do anything besides my home work
(Report writing) and revise my notes for the coming test on Saturday. Boy is
that subject on report writing ever a sticker but I think I’ll manage to make
the grade. We paid in our money for the coming beer ration so about Sat. we
should get our beer. That should taste good as I haven’t any for some time.
Honey at the first opportunity I’m going to see the Enlistment officer and see
if I can sign up for three years, will they give me stateside duty. If they do
I’ll wire you for your opinion. I want to be with you so much that that is the
only solution to the problem that I can see. I know it’s a [edited for content]
of a long time to be in the Army but if I can be in the States and have you
with me I won’t mind it. The news in regards to the draft extension sounds
favorable but nevertheless “fathers” will get out first so that still leaves my
in. If you get this letter before you get a wire concerning the matter I wish
you’d give me your honest opinion. If I can accumulate enough yen in the next
couple of weeks I’m going to buy myself some officers clothing as we are
entitled to wear them. They are rather inexpensive at the quartermasters in
With all my love,
Your honey.
