January 31-44

Diane dearest,

This morning on arriving at the office I was overjoyed to find a POST CARD from you. The twenty-five words contained thereon (including the signature) were really welcome. The only trouble being that I couldn’t understand what you were talking about. What are you doing in Abeline at the Air School and what did you finish at Barkly and what is Barkly? In short what is it all about and please this time, take the trouble dear to write a letter in a bit more detail. Mail is infrequent enough down here without getting a POSTCARD, you small size Cuero Turkey. It is a good thing I can’t get my hands on that beautiful torso of yours or there would be a little bit of Diane all over the landscape. I suppose that you are out in that direction with Irene having tired of that big city (Dallas I mean, not FT. W). Look a couple of white faces in the eye for me. Breathe deep and beat your breast and say in a loud voice AH! TEXAS.

I could almost put all my news on a past card also (but I won’t, I’m too nice) for although there are tings stirring in this area nothing has happened of note. I wanted to get a little package off to you on a plane to Miami but it got away before I knew it so I still have some. I will find a way very shortly though honey. I should not send a thing though until I get my picture. I feel grossly neglected to say the least on that score. Talk about your Pop vacillating. Well now.

Today marks one more month gone by and now only three to go before I have a chance to get that leave and get back with my dearest for a good stay. I have mentioned a number of things to you about that but have had no return from you. I suppose that since you have been away that you have not yet received the letters. I am anxious to hear from you regarding it. Ted Brown called me the other evening and said that he had seen you at the Lapham’s. Said you had a beau. I was just shining up my forty five (I don’t need any practice, a knats eye at forty paces) when he said that it was Pop what-you-may-call-him, Lucy’s Pa. Said he had taken an apartment someplace. I didn’t get the drift of it all. Anyhow watch even the old men for I am a dangerous guy. Ted said that he was to be back in SA in two more days and would call you. I suppose though that you were not back by that time.

I see or rather hear that there was another BG list out recently. Of course this last recommendation has not had time as far as I am concerned but I am curious to know who was on it. Have you seen it yet? Send me a clipping if you can.

I sometimes wish that I had not gotten involved in this promotion business. Even if you make up your mind, pay no attention and just let things take there course you can’t help being interested in the returns as they come in. Sort of like the races, who will come in, in the next stanza. I’ll trade the whole bloody works for an opportunity to spend some time with you my dear. I love you so darn much that everything else really comes in second.

I am off to Lima, Peru on next Monday in company with the high command. That of course is many many miles out of our area but we are off on some sort of a diplomatic junket and I am tickled with the opportunity to go. They say it is a fine city and well worth a visit. We will be there two or three days. I will write but you can expect the letters to take some longer getting to you for that is a fur piece down the line. Maybe they will get there sooner judging by the daggone mail around this burg these days. You never heard so many complaints in your life as the grousing that is going on about the lack of mail, by all hands. We will probably take two days getting there and the same back so we will be about take two days getting there and the same back so we will be about a week in all. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we were going together? A sightseer and her buddy on the look.

Darling mine sit thee down and write me a nice long letter and answer some of my questions and what not as soon as you can. Oh yes George is going back to the States (Washington) in another day or two for a month or so. Some kind of a meeting. He is tickled. Boy don’t I wish that it was me. You would have yourself a train ride to make old girl.

Well loads and loads of love sweetheart. Lay off the POSTCARDS

Edwin

P.S. Just received a letter from “Doodles” I was almost afraid to open it. All it was, was a one sentence letter including a copy of a letter from Gen. Giles in D.C. on my going to the staff college – said to submit my application – and I would get easy censeduation – Well
