Lindbergh Field
June 16, 1942
Nick,
Thought
you were novel that you hadn’t written so darn long. Am glad you did write because I have a lot to
tell you.
The
best news I have to tell you is that I met our old friend Szajnecki. Yes sir Nick, old
Chet is looking like a million bucks in his new marine uniform. He is now located at North Island, Naval Air
Station. I was there for eight days last
month. Now that he is there I am across the bay at Lindbergh Field. Anyway I
was as happy as a lark to have met Chet in San Diego last week. We both had a
few drinks and got to feeling our oats. Both of us
gabbed like two old ladies we had so darn much to talk about. We would have
gotten together again only Chet is expecting to be sent to another post.
You
are so darn late in writing Nick that you still have me drum in your books as
an Ofe. [I]Was made corporal May 1st and sergeant May 30th. I must have been lucky Nick to get ahead like
this. I know some of the fellows who have been in the army ahead of me don’t
like it at all. I did my work and then since all of the time with not a word.
Some of these same fellows always try to see how much they can get away with. I
am going to continue to do all I can in order to get ahead. Will
not let up a single bit. I know darn well you soon will be up there Nick
as soon as your outfit gets going.
Would
love to write to Dan and Bird but don’t have their addresses. Now Nick as soon
as you hear from Dan and Bird send me their addresses. I still owe Dan about
two and a half bucks and I would like to send it to him. He probably will be needing this money when he starts on that twenty one
dollar pay check.
From
the looks of things Nick I think I soon will be going back to the field, I
hope. The work at the field is much more
interesting and the fellows I work with are tops. Just in case I do get back to
the field and Chet is sent to where he is expecting to go we are going to try
and get together again. Just in case
this does come true we will send you a card.
Until
I learn from you Nick, Cheerio and the best of luck. Keep your chin up and your
nose clean.
Pal
Duh.
