Dearest Mother and Dad

Your wayward son again and its just about time, I can hear you saying

I’ve been busy as usual and I’ve been away off and on for some time but I’m settled again and back at the old stamping grounds.

From what Helen tells me you all seem to be getting along swell.  I was sorry to hear about the dog but I never could figure out why you ever took him in the first place, there’s a limit to everything.

It won’t be long till Christmas.  By the time you get this I expect it will be just about due.  I’ve been everywhere to get cards or the special V mail forms to no avail.  So I won’t be able to send even one.  To my ever loving and indulgent mom and Pop I send my deepest love and appreciation this Christmas season.  My only regret is that I can’t be with you to enjoy it.  As I look back at all the wonderful times we have had and even a few sad ones during this time of the year I can say that I’ve been a fortunate lad to be possessing of such a swell Mother and Dad.

As yet none of the packages have arrived.  I expect them almost any time now cause some of the boys have received them.  It’s going to be a lot of fun opening each one of them and I’m sure that every item will be cherished.

We now have our tent completed, that is we have all the fancy trimmings.  A second floor for storage, an awning a private shower and washstand combined electric lights and a few home made tables and chairs. Haven’t named it yet but I guess there’s plenty of time for that.

Helen tells me that you have run into Helen Fagan and her husband right in the old home town.  I hope they are worthy of the place.  Also I gather that aunt Nan is living with Nana.  I sure am glad if it’s true.

I had to tell you that I got a letter from Marge.  She didn’t have too much to say except that she had a wonderful time up home.

For your information it’s hot here in New Guinea.  It also rains occasionally but definitely with it all I’m getting along fine.  No aches or pains no nothing, just good health.  Plenty of hard work keeps my mind occupied as I do very little fretting or fussing.

I’m still trying to get some pictures to send you but as yet no luck there are a few cameras in the outfit but films are scarce and then the question of developing.  I expect before long to work it out so you may eventually get some shots.

I now have about 25 combat missions under my belt, wish I could tell you more but you understand that it’s impossible, Mr. Bolling an intelligence officer makes it even more important that I say nothing.

That’s about all the news I have from here for now.  I send you both my love and affection with all my wishes to you for a Happy and Merry Christmas

                                                                        Love,

                                                                           Walt.

P.S.  Bess wishes to all for a pleasant holiday.
