Thursday night-
April 5, 1945
Dearest Elizabeth,
Can’t understand what has happened to my mail from you. Have only
received one of your letters in the past two weeks. You are writing, -aren’t
you? It must be the mail service, but regardless it is very discouraging.
We
had a special dinner at the club tonight in honor of our former C.O. The
Commanding General of the Fifth Wing, Brig. – General Lawrence was present, and
we had the usual after-dinner speeches for such an occasion. At least it was something to break the
monotony of K rations.
Say, I forgot about to tell you about the real excitement at the club
the other night. We have an Italian string quintet, with two female vocalists
singing in station only. Well, these two women got into an argument or
something and the final thing we knew they were at each other, “ tooth and claw” pulling each other’s hair, scratching,
hollering, crying, and carrying on in general. The men in the Dago quintet had
to pull them apart. All this took place during the meal hour, and of course we
all had to stop eating to watch the bout. The old club is really getting lively
these days.
Well, I have 30 missions now. My last was to Udine in North Italy. Flew
lead again and we bombed an airdrome. I wrote you that John had finished, and
he and Mirowski are up at Rome now for a few days.
Hughes is up after his 33rd mission tomorrow.
Well
darling, will have to close for now with the hope that I will find a letter
from you tomorrow. Be good and stay sweet.
All my love,
Jimmy
