Sunday afternoon,
April 16th, 1944
Dear Folks,
It is now
about 6 p.m. and we just had a good dinner of chicken, chocolate pudding,
mashed potatoes, peas, carrots, and coffee.
I am sitting outside on my blankets now and the sun is very warm- I am
killing time until the movie starts at 9:30 tonight, “The Snow Major” with Pat
O’Brien. It is about the life of Hank Cavanough who used to be football coach at Fordham and it
should be interesting especially to me.
They played “The song of Bernadette” here last night but I was in town
on a pass. I did see it anyhow with
Simpson in
Today I got Ma’s letters of March 18, 20, and Dad’s of the 8th of April. So you see they come in leaps and bounds. I sent that check to the Safety Storage with my endorsement on it so they can close the account. Deckert and I opened that account so that we could have a checking account- and a small balance was required. I had forgotten all about it.
I knew the sketch didn’t look like me but I just wanted to have some fun. It only cost me 2s or 40 cents so it didn’t cost much.
The surprise I mentioned should be here sometime in the latter part of this week.
Tuesday afternoon,
I never got your letter of Sunday finished so I’ll just continue along with this. Since Sunday I received two v-mails, one from Tom and one from Eileen. Tom asked if I would prefer Capital letters in the v mail. Capitals are better than the regular typing as it is quite small. Ma asked me how my field jacket turned out after I washed it- it turned out good and the washing doesn’t hurt them at all. You need not send me any washing soap as we have plenty of it.
There isn’t much more to say- I bought more air mail envelopes- we can buy them over here you know, and I have plenty of writing paper as well.
Please send me some candy, caramels, or toffee or those molasses kisses preferably. Don’t forget to let me pay for it by drawing the money out of the bank. I make $93.60 a month now so I can afford that much.
God bless all of you,
Joe
