The Beautiful Blue Pacific

August 2nd 1945

Hello Everybody,

How are you all back in sunny Baltimore. Fine I hope. I’m still kicking myself.

Yesterday I received 14 letters and I was glad to get them. I received one from you, one from Bee and also one from the Mrs. In New Mexico. It really was a treat to get them all too no fooling.

So old Gumpy was home on a leave eh. Well, I bet you was ever tickled to see him weren’t you? I bet the old boy really looks sharp considering he is in the army. No you take the Navy – that’s a real he man’s outfit so they tell me. If that’s true what the devil am I doing in it? As far as he men goes, Grandpa and Buddy are the only real he men in the family. This Navy would really be something if those two big time operators were in it. I can see them two in those form fitting bell bottom jobs on liberty in New York or Philadelphia. Wouldn’t all the glamour gals of 1922 be in their prime then. Then I could say I really seen all there is to see and be satisfied and die... “laughing.”

Say, that really must have been something up there in New York with that plane crash. I understand a lot of people were killed and injured. We heard about it on the radio aboard the ship. But they didn’t give us much straight dope. I don’t guess people will ever find out what really happened.

I guess ole Glo is having the time of her life out there in the west. They say those desert moons are really pip. Just the right thing for a couple of newly-weds. Glo tells me it’s plenty hot out there during the day-time and nice and cool at night. Boy I sure would give half of my life to be out there or anywhere back in the states just for one week. I’m going to drop her a line just as soon as I get the time.

Tell the gang I said hello and to write a soon as they can. Love to all and God Bless You.

Your “Two Toned” Grandson,

Howard W. Herold
