Dear Grandparents:
Just received you most welcome letter yesterday, dated July 3rd. I thought you forgot about me because I wrote and didn’t get any answer.
I am well and now at Leyte in the Phillypines. I have been in all the action at Okinawa and hit a couple terrible typhoons. These typhoons are worse then combat, I think. I am very thankful that this war is over and we can come home. The point system the navy has is very disgusting. They aren’t being fair to us boys that have been overseas and in combat. I have been in the navy 38 months and overseas 30 months out of the 38. They give all the credit to the married men who have just a few months service. We single men want to come home and get married and have a family too. I have 38 points and need six more to get a discharge. I’ll be in at least six or eight more months.
I haven’t got your packages as yet so I guess everything will be spoiled. It’s no use sending anything anymore, because I hardly ever get them and when I do, you can’t eat it. I told my mother the same thing and not to send any Xmas pkgs because I may be on my way home from out here by Christmas.
Did I tell you that Katy and I are getting married next June after she graduates. She is a swell girl and we get along fine. I guess you’ll be seeing her again on her way home from school.
I got a letter from Cap and he had just come back from a rest on the Isle of Capri. He said he had a wonderful time and expects to be on his way home in another month. He has eighty nine points. Is uncle Norm got enough to get out? I haven’t heard from Howard in about 3 months so I don’t know where he is except out here somewhere.
I bet Gloria is seeing a lot and having a swell time in New Mexico. How do you like the pictures I took in Panama. We folks I’ll sign off for now so write when you can.
Love to all:
Charles
