Friday the Thirteenth-July
Dear Mom-
Just a line
to say that I am O.K. We’re still at the same place but not for long I guess-
think we’ll be in
Received your letter with the clipping about “Ten Nights” See that thing has been going for a long time- the cast has changed quite a bit- Johnny Kohler and John Dietrich + Bobbie are about the only originals.
Last night
we had a Russian Concert that’s was really grand. The Russians are displaced
persons and they seem to enjoy entertaining us-Food is so scarce over for
anyone except for U.S Troops that they’ll do anything for a meal. They had
singers, dancers and a swell chorus-reminded me of The Don Cossack programs
that used to come to
The 14th
There’s a slight pause here-A day has passed-Last night we had a swell dance a Russian band (again over entertainers) played I had a wonderful time. Danced a lot with Marjorie-That in itself made it grand-She’s a swell dancer- We had some Polish and French girls here- 40 of them- There was beer and lemonade- just a great big happy family- It was more fun than anything I’ve done for a long time-
Today we’re
all packed and ready to move. We’re going down near
Rumor has it (and a strong rumor) that we are not on any shipping list thru September- It may be a long time before we leave the continent to go in either direction- It is possible that we will be in the Army of Occupation-Incidentally my A.P.O has changed again-It’s 403 now-3rd Army-I’ve been in all the armies over here now except the 15th –I know this must be confusing to you and the general civilian home front-We can change armies and corps overnight-When you see a headline “1st army goes home” it really means 1st Army Headquarters goes home and the rest of it is transferred to another army or sent on direct to the Pacific-misleading to the public. We’ll keep sweating it out and perhaps someday we’ll get home-
Well I have a couple of other letters to write so I’d better close for this time- Let me hear from you often-
Love,
Jack
