Dear Mom and Aunt Trude[3]
Thank you for your dear package which I have received along with letter. Effective immediately, a freeze on furloughs has been issued. I do not believe that furloughs will be available for Christmas. This freeze was issued in order to be able to control the huge [amount of] rail travel for Christmas. Without fail I will be home for Christmas. I will do it as follows. It is anticipated that furloughs will be issued only for the garrison district Koblenz. Therefore, I will request a 3–4 day furlough for Metternich, which is in the garrison district. Send me my civilian clothes. 1 combination, light-colored coat, shoes, and the new shirt, also hat, to Metternich. There I will change clothes and then come home because in uniform I will need a furlough pass and without it, I will not get through anywhere. Prepare the package immediately, because no one knows how long it would take the things, just before Christmas. I have an identity card as proof as a civilian here.
For today, kind regards
Max
