Hello Dot Oct 22
Well kid got your letter and got a kick out of some parts of
it. Poor old Vin its only the beginning. Wait till
they start to really train him. What he is doing now is only basic training.
That’s easy as hell compared to what he is in for after. HAHA Don’t know why the shots should bother him. I just finished about
nine before we came up here. Don’t bother you if you don’t get shaky and get to
dread the 2 inch needle. HAHA But if that and a little cold is all that bothers
him he is still ok. HAHA In my outfit here the only thing
that puts you out of work. Well a broken leg is good for three weeks.
Two boys had appendix taken out and were back on duty in four weeks. So you see
you don’t get much time to heal. HAHA You don’t catch
cold after you are in the army a while. Don’t know why it is but is seems living
out in all kind of weather has something to do with it. All new men get colds
when they first get in here. It is a damn rough life and you don’t even go on sick
call after you get here a while. If you got a pain in the leg they give you a
box of pills. HA If you get a pain in the back they
give you some pills. If you get a pain in the belly its
pills. You save some of them and look them over
they are all the same pills. HAHAHA So you see what
the hells the use. I have never been on sick call yet, so it don’t
bother me much. Since we got here the sick book has been very light. But guess
I got of the subject. Vin will be ok after he is in a
while. He is just beginning to see the difference from a civilian and a soldier
or gob. Its all the same army and navy the same kind
of training at first. He will get that weight back as soon as he quits his
worrying about what’s coming next. They take all that home sickness out of you
in about two months. Us veterans take it all in stride nothing surprises us any
more. We expect any thing and usually get it. You cant
mean any thing in the army. In civilian life you can say I am going to a show.
In here you say if nothing happens I will go. In other words you are on duty 24
hours a day. It’s a year around job with a furlough if you are lucky. HA Passes
have been tight as hell in this Regiment. They have been issuing damn few of
them. The ones they do issue are for from five till 12. That’s from five at
night till twelve the same night. Weekends are from five Saturday night till 12
midnight Sunday. So you see we have damn little time on a pass. Couldn’t make
it to
We got the toughest guys in the company in our platoon. All the guys that go over the hill we get them when they come back. A bunch of tough boys but I get along swell with them all. Hope I can get home before we leave. Think I may get seven days leave. They say we do anyhow that after all the old men get furlough. So may get a chance to see you all. But things are moving so fast here ain’t sure of anything. But will try to get home for at least three days.
That little Gordie must be a corker form all reports and the girls tell me he is a little devil. Has only one ambition to torment the little girls. Takes after me, a chip off the old block. Say hello to all the kids for me I love them all. Tell Gorden if he ever gets a furlough be sure to rub it in. HAHA I new that the kid would get L, D. He will get his D.C. soon. Those questions are just red tape. It aint there fault, they have to ask them. That’s army red tape. Say hello to Ma Looosemore for me. Hope to get a chance to write to her soon. Well kid guess I run out of BS so will have to say
So Long,
Jim
PS If you have a little of that quiet stuff could use a little. But if you cant spare it Hon get it. Love and kisses
Jim
