Dear Folks,
As
usual I’m sorry I haven’t written but also as usual I don’t have the time. I
don’t have the time now really! I should be at a “rectifier power supplies”
review and I should be working some the 60 communication circuit problems I
have to do before Monday but, I know you all are always afraid I’ve broken my
neck or something so by an ad in. I‘m o.k. except for a slightly weak brain. I
pulled down a 45 on a radio going Sat. Consequently I had to go to see “the
man” and he gave me some extra review work to do. Also Friday some Lt. made the
barracks inspection and boy was it “chicken” About 40 on the lower deck were
frowned upon for one thing or another, (dirty linen, gear adrift), including
me. We got two hours extra instructions Sat afternoon. It was really a laugh.
We were sent to the book room and still there were so many of us there were
about 10 left over. (Me included) so- the R.T. in charge says “look fellas! There’s
a pile of books to be stacked. A couple of you could do it in 15 minutes but I
don’t feel like walking around hunting for work for you to do. Let ‘em on the
shelves as best you can.” We had 2 hr and 15 minutes
to go. So, we formed a chain and passed the books down, one at a time. I
suppose there were over a thousand of them. It took exactly 2hrs and 15
minutes. Tsk, tsk!
Never-the-les,
I missed the 1400 and 1600 liberty parties and stayed in and did my homework
and all I had to do. I got out about 1830 and got to Bay Saint Lumis about
2030. They met me in a car when I was about halfway there. There was a party
getting ready to start at 8 p.m.
It
was really a nice party, lots of stuff to eat more people. By people I mean
girls naturally. There were lots of them there I didn’t know. I was surprised,
I thought I knew everybody there.
We
didn’t do much of anything this weekend, stayed down the Canteen most of the
time. I’m going to make some lucky gal a good wife! I’m chief cook and battle
washer down at the Canteen. “Rusty” has a little “Bantam” car. Just like an
Austin. We had more fun than flitting around in that little thing. It’s just
like a toy.
We
had a nice experience with a drunk while waiting with the girls to catch the
bus back to the base. I was driving the car and this guy insisted the tail
light wasn’t working. The final time we same him was when he climbed up on the
bunker and looked in the rear window. But scared the girls
silly. They didn’t want us to go an leave them alone
with him so after promising him faithfully (he was huge) I wouldn’t leave him
(he said he didn’t like to be in the dark) I persuaded him to see if the tail
light worked. He was standing on the running board and I couldn’t get rid of
him. When he stepped off I left him in a cloud of dust. We drove a couple of
hundred feet and got out. Then I had to run back because Rusty couldn’t get the
hand brake off- Had what a time. We almost missed the bus.
Well,
got a letter from Church. He came to see you but you all weren’t there. I got
Harvey a $12.50 bracelet in New Orleans. She seems very pleased with it. Ain’t us mortals broke! Pop, I got
the cigarettes today, thanks a lot. Hey ma, what happened to the brakes huh. I’m about to starve at might before tops. Well, all for
now gotta study.
Love
as always
Bro
P.S.
Got a letter from Charlotte Fond as a result of a sarcastic telegram I sent her.
She thought it was sweet. Ich, these women!!
