June 30, 1945
Dear Billy,
Mother
received your letter of June 25th this morning. Pretty snappy
service, eh?
It’s
too bad you aren’t permitted to wear summer uniforms. If the weather over there
is anything like it is here, you’re just going to melt. According to the
weather report which I just received over the telephone the temperature at the
moment is 89° and it’s going to
95° this afternoon, which I wouldn’t exactly call cool.
I got a new permanent on Monday night and am I glad. My
hair had gotten pretty long and was all sort of hanging down on the back of my
neck and it was pretty hot. I now have what is known as a “feather cut”. It’s
quite short and all little curls.
Mother and I saw “Bloomer Girl” as I told you we were
going to in my last letter. It was very good. As I told you, one of our tickets
was for the right side and the other for the left side. However, it worked out
very well. The usher noticed that the tickets were not next to each other but I
told her I would sit next to mother until someone else came in, which she said
was alright. In about five minutes a lady came in, all excited, with one ticket
for the right side and once for the left, so we just exchanged a “right” ticket
for a “left” and everyone was happy.
After the show, we walked over to Stouffer’s at Grand
Central for dinner and we got there at exactly 6:05. Well, without any
exaggerating, there must have been at least 250 persons standing waiting for
tables. Can you imagine that? We stood for a little while and then decided we
would try the other Stouffer’s on the Fifth Avenue. We figured it couldn’t be
any worse. There were several standing there, too, but we were seated in about
twenty minutes, which wasn’t too bad.
When it came to ordering dinner, I was in quite a quandary.
There were two different kinds of meats on the menu, baked ham and Salisbury
steak, which is quite unusual. It took me a long time to make up my mind which
to have. I’m just not used to having a choice any more.
Schrafft’s usually doesn’t have
any meat at all at lunch time, and quite frequently they don’t have any meat at
dinner. We had dinner in there a couple of weeks ago and the only meat on the
menu was sausage cake. Bye for now honey lamb.
Let me know if you want anything,
Helen Meehan
