Dear Mother:

So Hans came to see you.  My. My.  So he has fun in the Army.  Just wait till he gets into a Camp, then things will be different.  Yes, you can have fun but you got to be on your toes to have time to have fun.  Out here the only day we’re got to ourselves is Sunday.

But as he goes to school in a city they can bum around a lot.  I bet he sure thinks he’s something.

Yesterday and today have been perfectly clear.  This is the first time since I’ve been here.

Monday I was on the rifle range but didn’t do so good because the wind was so strong It kept blowing me around all the time.  The wind was so strong it blew one of the targets about a hundred feet.  But just the same my shots were pretty close.  I am going out again this afternoon I think.

Tuesday I was on K.P. and is that a job.  I was there from 5 AM. to 9 P.M.  We washed dishes, scrubbed floors, scrubbed garbage cans, porches, etc.  The kitchen floor is scrubbed after every meal.  Thousands of dishes.  Enough dishes for 400 men.  Three of us took turns washing these three time that day.  They are washed and dipped in boiling hot water then picked out to dry.  A lot of work.

Today I am fireman for 3 barracks.  I have to keep the boilers and heaters going and the floors clean and wash them if necessary.  I just go through scrubbing one.

Is grandma at our house or where?  I sure got plenty of mail.

The other day I got 10 letters which is the most I’ve ever received.

I got some church news the other day.  And it said that Lester Erwig, Florence Albrecht and me were together at Camp Crowder.

Over 8,000 rounds of ammunition are fired on the range here every day.

Well I can’t think of any more gossip.

Your son,

    Melvin

P.S. I got the pictures from Clarence

I also got payed last night for ½ month

I don’t know how they figured it, but I got $90.17 and in the army you don’t question the figures.
