Dear Mother:
Well, I was lucky enough to get open post yesterday and we all went to San Antonio. There we looked over the whole place. Most interesting was the Alamo where a big battle was fought. It is preserved in its original form and a lot of the guns and canon balls have been preserved. Also maps, books and documents. There are more things there than I describe in a letter. They are still finding things imbeded in the walls. In 1937 they found a knife blade in a wall and that is on display. Also all kinds of hand guns, knifes, Indian heads, rock hammers and other relics.
They had 1000’s of souveniers there and I bought you a high class one. It cost enough so let me know in what shape it gets there in. It’s packed very good. And no more of them are being made. Nicky will probably be interested in it. There is another place in town full of antiques and everything imaginable called the “Buckhorn.” This will be the next place I’ll visit if I ever get there again.
I also sent a penant home from another little shop. There are many Mexican shops with all their stuff to sell. They sure can rattle off the Spanish.
Also took some pictures with a rented camera but it will be awhile before we get the results.
All in all we had a lot of fun. Some of the boys have shipped out for training, but no rumors about pilots yet.
Your son,
Melvin
Got the letter Thursday morning.
We also saw “Happy Go Lucky.” A big show with a sky, stars and morning clouds for a ceiling.
Some joint.
