Dear Father
Today the
sun is shining brightly. We are too far from the sea to get much of a view; I am
looking forward to seeing it some day. Tonight I am in guard as a Corporal.
Tomorrow I may get a chance to get to town. It all was in the cards. There are
many stories that this town is rough. Well I figure to find the Harvard Club
and call it a day otherwise. There are no other possibilities.
When you
get the chance would you send me the names and addresses of all the Mutual
Savings Banks along the west coast? I am toying with the idea of opening
accounts by mail with those located in the various port cities so that when I
return I will have a set up as far as money is concerned.
This place
as far as heating arrangements goes is pretty poor. It is one of those coal
deals. The one in the guardhouse was out when we came on. I called to mind the
way I had done last winter up in Omaha while I was in school. At present we are
being sweated out of the blame place. Up there Old McDonald and I kept from
freezing to death. For a while I was afraid that I might have to chop down a
building for fire kindling wood but I found a little old 2 x 4 unguarded so it
is burning merrily.
Things are
pretty dull at present so not much to say that can get bye the censor.
I figure to
write a few letters tonight to keep things cooking. So far no mail has come
through
John
