My dearest Maggie,
I
have been so lonesome today again, nothing to do all day but sit and think of
you, what you are doing and every little thing. I have been sewing most of the afternoon, I sewed Cheverons
[Chevrons] on three wool shirts and my field jacket. I have my overcoat yet,
but I may wait for that until I come home although I may sew them on tomorrow
night or some other night. I am going to bring along some Chevrons to sew on my
kahaki [khaki] shirts. Say, honey
are the cleaners expensive at home? Let me know, and if they aren’t so
bad I will bring a shirt or so home to be cleaned. I want to send my overcoat also, it hasn’t been cleaned for a long time. Can your Dad
wear that jacket I sent along? I also washed out my gloves today (2 pair) and
my three belts. I washed another for a dime. It’s getting near furlough time so
I have to take in the washing.
I
forgot to tell you yesterday my dear that our barracks were so good for
inspection on Saturday that Lt. Hamilton is going to give us a few extra days
(a pass). Instead of having to be back Friday the 10th we don’t have
to be back now until 6 AM. 13th. That will
give us two weekends. You see there is only half of the company here now and
what is left here had to clean up for inspections. We had a tough major, and he
was very pleased, unless he changed since we were here last time.
I
want to take time out now to tell you I am in love with you. I love you very
much my dear. Your letters always make me so happy. I always read them over and
over.
How
is your water at home? Is it still dirty? I want to take a good bath when I get
home. I want to soak for about an hour I don’t think a shower gets all the dirt
off.
I
had the awfulest dream last night. I dreamed you
refused to take off your night gown to go to bed with me and I got so mad and
put my back to you all night. (You wouldn’t refuse would you? Answer.) I can keep you warm enough I really did dream that.
How
is Dorthy? Do you think she will be home when I am? I
would like to see her again.
I
am kept very busy here honey, more now than in Tennessee. I sure will
appreciate a good rest and a good bed with you beside me.
We
had a very good dinner today, I wish you could have
been here with me so I would have enjoyed it more. We had chicken, cranberry
sauce, good gravy and some other things, I can’t remember but it was very good.
Do
you remember tonight a year ago? That was the fall of you. You must have liked
married life awful lot to quit school for me. We were in that hotel in Port
Clinton and you came back to me three days later to stay with me, you came to
camp for Thanksgiving. I’ll never forget those days, and I appreciate
everything you have done for me. I only hope it isn’t too long that we can be
living together once again. My heart aches so much for you, and I get so
lonesome for you. Someday you and I are going back to Port Clinton, maybe in
the summer and spend a week or so there, it will bring back so many memories. I
am going to get you to swim if it’s the last thing I do, I think the three of
us can have loads of fun. I know you will go in the water then, you
wouldn’t want out baby to think you a sissy, afraid of the water, would you.
Don’t
forget we have some things to talk over when I come home, but don’t start for a
day or so because I am going to do all kissing for that time, you know we have plenty to catch up on.
Try
and get some films for my camera so we can take some pictures. I am going to
bring a helmet along home if I can for our mantel piece.
You
will soon be able to open an army store. I told the boys that Rally and I would
enlist next war, I’ll be the Supply Sgt. and he my clerk, and can be home
running a army store, we two could send you plenty.
This
is the largest letter I have wrote to you in a long
time.
This
is about all I have for tonight. Hope to
hear from you tomorrow.
How is the whiskey
situation?
I love you
terribly much sweetheart.
All my love, your husband forever,
Preston
XXX
A real big kiss for you
