My
dearest wife;
Well Maggie I guess you are pretty
happy by now over the victory over here. I wanted to write yesterday but I was
out celebrating, after all this day only comes once every 25 years. Some people
where I take the laundry invited us in for some wine, we had two kinds of wine,
champagne and coffee royale, well
anyway after it was all over I was just a little bit [rye]. I was thinking of
you, and how I would love to spend V day with you. We only have one more battle
to fight, and that shouldn’t take more than a year at the most. The biggest
problem is to get the suppliers down there. I don’t want you to get the idea
that I will be coming home soon, now that it is over here. I have been reading
the papers on the point system, and the only thing I can see is that when the
last shot is fired in Japan, then you know I will be home within a year or two
after. The thing that holds me back in points is I have no overseas time, but I
will in a year or two.
I didn’t I didn’t know you had
French in school. I sometimes wish I had taken it, but it doesn’t bother me one
way or the other. I don’t have any trouble understanding the medium of exchange
in money. It’s very simple- it is a 2 to one. One franc is worth 2 cents. One
dollar- fifty francs- ten dollars is 500 francs. It is very easy only the
prices are so high. The other day I saw a beautiful blue sweater I thought
would be nice for you, but it had an awful price- 4300 francs or $86 in
American money. You could probably buy a couple dozen for that price. That’s
just an example of some of the prices.
I am still feeling fine, except for
a slight headache today, but I guess I can sleep that off alright.
I hope and pray V-J
day will be coming soon.
Goodnite sweety, All my love
Pres.
